DIVE MARSHAL REPORTS

ARTILLERY RAMP / LITTLE PALM BEACH

Sat 22 MAR 2003

SHORE

Overcast, 20C, SE F3-4, calm conditions on the sheltered dive sites - just a swell, no breakers, rising tide to HW at 1204.

Taking Jeremy Simpson visiting KH from UK for his first dive in HK, and first dives for about a year - so 2 check out shallow dives under an Instructor - chance to take it easy, get used to different kit, sample the HK conditions. No promises but might find Seahorses, Stingrays, Octopus.

Artillery Ramp - viz good (5-8m) down to 8m then murky due to lack of light. Very clear on The Car wreck. Due to high tide, didnt get down to The Pot and its resident Octopus. Shoals of Bronze Cardinal, Chinese Demoiselle and Pearl Spot Chromis, 1x 300mm grouper, "Rhino" shrimp, anemone, hermit crabs, various shellfish. Some Diadema, may have been a Hookah diver working earlier collecting them. After achieving an easy 10m, return concentrated on finding interesting stuff - plenty of large Clarke's Anemoneifsh with anemone and Ghost Shrimps. Goat, Glass, Blennie, Goby on sandy bottom, followed The Sand Ridges to the western rocks - Decorator urchins and Cowrie on rocks. Shoals of Chromis and demoiselle, Sweepers hiding among the rocks. Looking hard for Seahorse - so checking out all likely spots and their usual haunts. Got lucky checking one of these out - a 150mm male specimen which gently captured and supported on finger for Jeremy to take a look at. (Didnt bring a camera - typical - sure to find something good if dont!!). Spent some time observing this chap before releasing again over his patch and watching him swim off - an excellent sighting for a visitor. Back toward the ramp, not much else, 2 jellyfish at The Tractor.

Little Palm Beach - viz slightly reduced due to sandy bottom stir up and murky due to lack of sunshine. But clearer than usual expechially over rocky areas. Checked out The Rockpile and The Rock Reef for anything special, but nothing unusual, shoals of small fish, but no Butterfly. Anemone and Clown out deeper before turning round at 6m. Time to check for rays in the shallows. Located the Outboard Motor debris but no Morays, crossing The Plain, no Octopus (is everyone on holiday?), not many crabs, but plenty of small stuff. Shorter dive as Jeremy getting cold. Back to The Ramp, many small hermits and other crabs.
