Take advantage of BSAC's 50 years of experience in diving the world's oceans.

Join in our diving activities at a local, national or international level.

No wonder we're the world's biggest diving club.

LEARN TO DIVE WITH THE BSAC
Every year around 100,000 people learn to dive the BSAC way.

We let their interest take them where they want to go......enjoying clear blue waters, exploring wrecks, discovering undersea life, taking photographs or films, learning to teach others to dive.

The BSAC will take you there.

Beginners are welcome at any BSAC Branch or School - choose the method and speed that suits you best.  MARINE DIVERS offers both.

ALREADY QUALIFIED?
If you are already certified then you are welcome at any BSAC Branch and can immediately join in their regular diving programme.

Appreciate the advantage of going diving with other Branch members - and enjoy the social side, too.

To advance your diving knowledge, just cross-over to your corresponding BSAC level and continue from  there.

Start by speaking to a branch or school about a SALT certificate which recognises your previous training.

The Branch will determine what crossover training is required before starting BSAC upgrading courses.

Full diving members receive a monthly copy of BSAC DIVE.

BSAC members can find holiday bargains through the BSAC Travel club.

FAQs ABOUT THE BSAC, ITS BACKGROUND, ITS PHILOSOPTHY, WHAT IT HAS TO OFFER YOU

What is the BSAC?
BSAC stands for British Sub-Aqua Club, the world's biggest diving club.

The BSAC is one of the most respected diving organisations in the world with a reputation for the excellence of its diver training programme.

Formed to promote underwater sport, exploration, science and safety to the highest standards, the BSAC is a Company Limited by Guarantee and as such cannot distribute a profit to its shareholders, the Members (including Officers and Council Members).

This means the net results of all BSAC activities are constantly ploughed back into further development of the sport to the benefit of all divers.

What is a BSAC Branch?
BSAC branches are autonomous groups of BSAC members who organise and promote their own diving activities, frequently having group ownership of equipment such as dive boats, compressors and often training equipment.

Most branches have open membership and are based on population centres, usually meeting weekly at local swimming pools.

Some groups are based on closed facilities, such as Universities, Military bases or works-based Sports Clubs, and form Special Branches with restricted membership.

BSAC Branches can be found in numerous locations all around the World, with the majority located in the U.K.

MARINE DIVERS SCHOOL has its own special branch.

How can I join a BSAC Diving Course?
You can learn to dive with the BSAC, or you can continue your training if you have started with another organisation.

Courses are available either from a BSAC Branch, or at a BSAC School.

Branch training courses are usually provided for the members of a Branch and are organised around the regular Branch meetings, usually at a local swimming pool. BSAC Schools offer dive courses to everyone, it is not necessary to first become a BSAC member.

Courses are organised at various times and locations by arrangement and can even be arranged as part of a diving holiday.

MARINE DIVERS requires all trainees to join BSAC and their branch.

If I have started to dive with another organisation, can I continue with the BSAC?
Of course, the BSAC welcomes all divers.

It is not unusual to be tempted to try diving while on holiday, and then wish to continue when you return home.

Just contact your local BSAC Branch or School and they will be happy to help you continue your dive training and to gain further experience.

Any training or certification which you have already received will be taken into account.

MARINE DIVERS will evaluate your prior training and experience and recommend the best way for you to crossover to BSAC.

Ask members who have previously crossed over for their opinion of our training.

MORE ABOUT BSAC

Some history

A summary of the key points in more than 40 years of continuous development in diver safety.

The fascinating story of the evolution of the world's biggest diving club.

The British Sub Aqua Club is by any measure a quite extraordinary organisation.

Formed and run throughout its existence by enthusiastic and dedicated members, the club has successfully competed with commercially orientated bodies and has thrived in the process.

From its beginnings the club has received world-wide recognition as a leader, standard-setter and innovator in the field of sport diving.

1953

The BSAC was formed in London in the autumn of 1953 by a number of "persons interested in underwater activities" whose aim was "to promote underwater exploration, science and safety in these activities".

The club's founder was Oscar Gugen. assisted by Peter Small, a keen diver who tragically died a few years later in the world's first dive to the depth of 1,000 feet.

1954 Original Neptune logoThe BSAC quickly became a significant force in sports diving and by the end of 1954 it had been recognised in Britain as the governing body for the new sport of underwater swimming, a responsibility which it still retains.
1955

The growth of the British Sub-Aqua Club has been phenomenal.

At the time of its first Annual General Meeting in December 1953. the Club had approximately 100 members. By January 1955. the membership had grown to over 1,100.

1959 During 1959 the BSAC became a founding member of CMAS, the World Underwater Federation.
1976

BSAC LogoIn 1976 the Club responded to a growing demand for commercial training of sports divers by establishing the BSAC School system.

BSAC Schools are independent businesses which are authorised to train and award a number of BSAC diving qualifications.

There are currently over 200 BSAC Schools world-wide.

1979 To keep pace with this growth. the Club was reorganised as a Company Limited by Guarantee in 1979.
1987

From the outset the Club has been active internationally and by 1987 had established a network of branches throughout the world with over 14 per cent of its membership located outside the UK.

During 1987 the BSAC formed a wholly owned subsidiary, BSAC International.

BSAC International soon expanded and by the end of 1987 had entered into an agreement with a Japanese Company and BSAC Japan was formed.

1990 The Club moved from its London Sports Council home in 1990 to its own new office complex in the North West of England.
Today The BSAC has some 45,000 members which makes it the largest single diving Club in the world.

Whilst Council normally meets about four times each year, Council Members usually have specific areas of responsibility in assisting the Officers in the running of the Club.

BSAC Coaching Scheme
Within the United Kingdom the BSAC has a number of Regional Coaches who are responsible for first line support of our branches and the organisation of courses and events at regional level.

Overseas this work is often carried out by regional Overseas Liaison Officers.

BSAC International
BSAC International is a wholly owned subsidiary of BSAC and as such pays its profits into BSAC for the development of the Club.

It is run by a Board of Directors appointed by the Officers and Council and is responsible for development and management of BSAC commercial activities, particularly overseas.

This includes supervision and expansion of the BSAC Schools system and franchises such as BSAC Japan and BSAC Korea.

BSAC Schools
These are independent commercial diver training schools, inspected and authorised by BSAC to use the BSAC diver training scheme and issue BSAC qualifications.

Fully qualified BSAC instructors are employed to deliver this training.

Schools often have their own attached BSAC branch, or work in close conjunction with other local BSAC branches.

DIVE magazine
DIVE magazine is an independently edited and published world class full colour diving magazine contracted to BSAC to be its journal. Besides a much appreciated broad spectrum of regular departments, DIVE articles cover all aspects of diving with regular equipment, travel and technical reviews.

Members receive the magazine monthly as part of the membership package, keeping them up to date with BSAC developments and happenings in the diving world in general.
