TRAINING BACKGROUND

Marine Divers offers training in the British Sub-Aqua Club system. This is considered the best in recreational diving, providing qualifications which are Internationally recognised.

BSAC training was originally based on British military diving practices (forerunners in much diving research), but over the years, while retaining the military methods of instruction, training has become tempered to suit the needs of the recreational diving market.

BSAC training has a reputation for being "hard". While it is thorough, with an emphasis on safety, courses are passed by young and old.

On completion, students have the satisfaction of knowing they have achieved a higher level of competency than with other training agencies. Marine Divers aim to ensure you have fun during training.

BSAC courses often provide more skills than other "equivalent" courses offered by other training agencies you may come across, for example: PADI, NAUI, SSI, IANTD, YMCA (mainly US systems) to name but a few. This means you get more for your money. BSAC courses certainly offer one of the most cost effective options in recreational diving.

Check what is being provided when comparing BSAC courses with those offered by other training agencies.

Marine Divers offers students a number of options for training to suit their particular needs, so we prefer all potential students to come and have a chat with us to discuss the best option, including having a try-out session if requested.

Whether you just want to dive on holiday, or wish to take up diving as a sport, the BSAC system of training is the system for you. Contact Marine Divers today to arrange a meeting and discuss YOUR needs. info@marinedivers.com.

BSAC TRAINING WITH MARINE DIVERS IS NOT SUITABLE FOR THOSE WHO WANT THE SHORTEST, EASIEST, CHEAPEST WAY OF OBTAINING A "DIVING LICENCE". BSAC QUALIFICATIONS ARE NOT AWARDED LIGHTLY.

MARINE DIVERS AIM TO PRODUCE A COMPETENT, CONFIDENT DIVER WITH ALL THE NECESSARY SKILLS TO PARTICIPATE IN AN ADVENTUROUS / EXTREME SPORT, COST EFFECTIVELY, AND IN A SUITABLE PERIOD OF TIME.

A major difference between training with BSAC and training with other agencies, is that all BSAC training is taught by an instructor, unlike in other systems where you may be expected to go away and read the manual (either from a book or on-line) or watch the video on your own. While perhaps 'convenient', this doesn't always ensure you pay the nesessary attention to detail, particularly when also trying to enjoy a holiday and all its distractions.

(Did you spot the spelling mistake in the above paragraph? Or did you just skip read? Attention to detail could save your life.)

BSAC ensures you have a thorough understanding of the necessary information and skills before venturing into what after all is a dangerous environment.

Once underwater, BSAC takes more care of you - the Instructor : Student ratio is much lower, usually 1 : 1 or 1 : 2.

As a BSAC Premier School, Marine Divers is able to offer the individual more personal development time, particularly to its Branch Members, to ensure they are confident and competent and able to enjoy fully this new sport as safely as possible.

THE MOST IMPORTANT COURSE YOU WILL EVER DO IS THE BEGINNERS COURSE - SELECT CAREFULLY IF YOU VALUE YOUR SAFETY. ONCE YOU PICK UP BAD HABITS ITS TOO LATE.

TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

Diving is a sport where you are constantly learning and developing your skills and experiences. How many times have you gone to a site where you have dived before and been convinced it was a completely different site?

Gaining more experience is an essential part of the process, but it is always better to build this experience on a sound foundation of skills learnt in a controlled environment.

There are lots of different ways in which those skills can be gained, not just through formal diver training to the next higher grade, but can be through a mix of dedicated Skill Development Courses to learning to become an Instructor to pass on your experience.

Usually such training involves a mixture of Theory and Practical lessons and there is nothing more distracting than trying to do theory lessons when the sun is beating down and the water looks so inviting, but now the nights are are closing in, its the perfect time to consider the next step.

SWIMMING

If you want to learn to dive, you need to be able to swim, not just for safety, but to give you confidence in the water and make the learning experience more enjoyable.

Marine Divers can arrange swimming lessons for groups or individuals on fixed program courses or for private coaching.

SNORKELLING / SKIN DIVING

Unlike the usual snorkeling experience, where you are given a life jacket, no training and expected to enjoy yourself floating on the water hoping to be close enough to marine life to see some (hence the title "Floaters"), Marine Divers teaches students to become Snorkel Divers, enabling you to dive down to have a close look at the action.

For many this is the start of a life-long passion for diving.

As of 12 April 2007, Snorkel Diver training is available to ages 6 up.

SCUBA DIVING

To really get down and enjoy marine life to the full, carrying a SCUBA set on your back enables you to spend more time underwater.

BSAC courses train you to go "deeper with experience". The limit for diving on compressed air with the BSAC is 50m (on completion of the necessary training), compared to 40m with other training agencies.

Initially you will be limited to safer depths of 20m, but can extend this range by completing further grading courses.

SCUBA Diver training with the BSAC is available to ages 12 up. Younger than this, the students may not be able to manage their own equipment or to fully understand the implications of their training in an adventurous sport.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT COURSES

The BSAC trains its members in all aspects of putting a Dive Team in the water, including Boat-Handling, Radio Procedures, First Aid, Use of Emergency Oxygen, Dive Team management, Navigation, Search and Recovery and more.....

These are called Skill Development Courses (SDCs) and are available to qualified divers of a suitable grade.

For a full list of SDCs available, visit the BSAC website www.bsac.org/techserv/sdc/studentinfo.html

Marine Divers can facilitate all these courses. See Marine Divers Training Program 20067 for course dates.

This includes new skills, for example those which have been removed from training course syllabi over the years; and practice / revision in the various skills taught on current courses. This ensures that members are up-to-date and ready for their next overseas dive trip.

Branch Training is available to Members only who are in-date with their diving qualifications.

CONTINUATION TRAINING

Now is the time to start thinking about what diving you want to do next year.

Time to reflect on what dives you have enjoyed most of this year and would like to repeat or extend and what didn't work as well that you might like to change next time round.

It may be that you want to explore more and deeper wrecks or take up photography to capture the images you see on a dive in a more permanent way than relying on just your memory.

However you decide to expand your experience, it is best done with improved skills and training.

Training can take many forms ranging from the formal to the informal.

As all instructors know you are always learning and they are fond of saying "the day you think you know all there is to know is the day to give up". As a consequence of this, instructors are almost always teaching and sharing their experiences even in the pub after a training session or a dive.

DIVER GRADE

The obvious starting consideration for most divers is "what does further training allow me to do that I cant do now".

In the context of Diver Training to the next higher grade the common consideration is increasing your depth limitations.

However, the key aspects of advancing your diver grade is usually the additional skills that allow for that safe progression to increased depth.

For example, it is the achievement of skills in use of an SMB, deployment of a delayed SMB, navigation using pilotage, compass and distance lines to ensure safe return to a fixed datum, and simulated decompression stops that are essential skills to be gained before progressing your depth experience beyond the 20m limit for an Ocean Diver.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT COURSES

SDCs form a discrete training, typically either one or two days, leading to a formal qualification in a specific area.

This could be to enhance diving safety through nitrox, rebreather or rescue skills training, to develop diving skills through courses such as Search and Recovery or Dive Marshalling or to expand areas of specialist interest such as seamanship, marine life identification or archaeology.

INSTRUCTOR

Already highly skilled? Time to consider passing on your skills to others.

BSAC Instructor Training not only teaches you how to pass on your skills and knowledge to others, but also provides a means to constantly analyse and update your own skills.

Developing a formal approach to critically analysing, assessing and reviewing skills is a good way of self improvement.

Further more, the need to constantly demonstrate those skills provides constant practice whilst contributing to the development of new divers and providing you with a constant stream of new buddies to dive with.

The best news about thinking about this now is that there is still plenty of time to get some more diving and training in before the end of the year or before the waters cool down too much.
