Diving is an adventurous sport which requires continuous training or experience building.
The best way to keep in date and avoid having to do refresher courses each year after a long lay off, or before going on an overseas trip is to do continuation training and or diving regularly throughout the year.
This involves planning your diving activities throughout the year rather than just in the summer months.
For example, if the winter months are too cold for you to do open water dives, then do dry training and pool training over the winter to keep existing skills in date or to gain new skills.
Divers who achieve higher diver grades are usually those who put in the effort to keep in date.
You get what you put in - if you want to progress to higher grades, then you need to expend the necessary time doing courses and diving both in Hong Kong and overseas to gather experience of different conditions and sites.
If you can dive a minimum of 1 day every 3 months this will help you to keep in date, but you will not progress.
To progress, this requires more frequent diving to keep your skills at the standard you achieved when you qualified, AND to do upgrading or skill development courses to increase your range of skills and abilities.
A really keen diver will be proactive and seek every opportunity to practice and keep upto date in the sport.
How can YOU do this?
Try and allocate 1 day / evening every week to the sport.
Marine Divers offers its members opportunities for practice on Tuesday Club Afternoons / evenings and Saturday Club Afternoons when they can practice for FREE under supervision.
Marine Divers also provides its members with Branch Training on Tuesday Club Nights - this involves teaching skills which may no longer be included in the current Diver Training Program (DTP) or to practice basic and rescue skills.
If you have had a layoff, then a Refresher course is recommended - this covers safety aspects of the sport and revision of skills in the pool.
For those wishing to progress to higher grades, upgrading courses are available.
Grading courses are longer courses lasting 5 to 12 days. They can be done over short periods or spread over longer periods, for example 1 evening a week alternating theory and pool, or ideally 1 day a week with a theory and pool session each day - this not only allows you to practice and improve existing skills, but gather new ones.
Skill Development Courses (SDCs) between grading courses add to your range of skills or develop new interests. These are 1 or 2 day short courses. Some may be required for higher grading courses.
Making a personal program mixing pool practice, open water diving, overseas trips, SDCs and grading courses will not only make you a more competent diver, but you will be safer and more confident in this your chosen sport.
And it will be FUN.....
