BSAC DIVER COX'N ASSESSMENT
AIM
To assess a candidate's practical boathandling skills, and the underpinning knowledge related to the general handling of small boats and to diving specific boat handling activities.
DURATION
Half Day
ENTRY GRADE
BSAC Boathandler age over 16 with 5 hours logged boathandling after course
or
have 20 hours logged boathandling experience.

SYLLABUS
Day 1
Assemble, Introductions, Instructor briefing, Administration
1. Dry Practical Assessment: DCDPA1 Voyage Planning
Each candidate is checked for knowledge of local tidal conditions on the assessment day, and the times of high, low and slack water, as well as the inshore weather forecast.
2. Practical Assessment: DCPA1 Prepare and Check boat
Group prepares, checks and launches boat. Candidates take turns being in charge.
3. Practical AssessmentL DCPA2 Practical Assessment
• Open water handling - high speed
• Confined water handling
• Anchoring
• Dropping and recovering a shot line
• Man overboard simulation
• Dropping and recovering divers
• Coming alongside
• Approaching a shelving shore
• Recovery onto trailer
4. Practical / Theory Assessment - Oral: DCTA1 Theory Assessment
Demonstrate an adequate knowledge of:
• Safety Equipment to be carried
• Emergencies - radio operation, engine failure procedure, overdue diver procedure, emergency signals
• Knots - clove hitch, round turn and two half hitches, anchor bend, sheet bend, bowline
• Rules of the road - collision avoidance, head-on, crossing, overtaking, factors influencing a vessel's ability to manouvrre, navigation lights, buoyage.
5. Classroom: DCT1 Open Forum
